Domestic violence in UAE rises: Dr Al Hamadi

Domestic violence in the UAE is on the rise, a top official at the Dubai Courts told on a programme on Noor Dubai Radio.

There were 63 cases of domestic violence recorded in 2009 out of 2,750 cases handled by the department, which formed 2.3 per cent. But the figures rose to 153 cases out of a total 3,012 violence cases reported in 2010. This is an increase of five per cent, said Dr. Abdul Aziz Al Hamadi, Head of Family Cases Department, Dubai Courts.

However, domestic violence comprise only 1.5 per cent of the number of other violations committed in the Emirates, he said and added that of the 2,600 violations recorded only 47 were domestic cases.

Al Hamadi was speaking on the programme Rouh Al Qanoon on Noor Dubai Radio.

He blamed such violence on both husband and wife and added that some women play ghost roles in provoking husbands to become violent. He added, of course, there are some men who lack culture and who do not believe in good relationships and abuse women. He urged men to control anger and respect their wives.

Al Hamadi said some cases which cannot be reconciled will lead to  divorce - in the worst case scenario.

He added that the hearing of family proceedings takes at least three months.

Wives are given the right to request for alimony, housing, visiting rights, etc.
