A driver was killed after he was flung 40 metres out of his four-wheel car when it hit another four-wheel vehicle on Sheikh Zayed Road and flew to the opposite end of the road, according to Dubai police.

The driver of the Toyota Land Cruiser told police he was on the right side of the road when his vehicle was hit by a Nissan Patrol on Tuesday night.

Dubai’s traffic police chief  Major General Mohammed Saif Al Zafin said the other driver was seen thrown out of his car and flying in the air before landing nearly 40 metres away after his vehicle hit the steel barrier in the middle of the road.

He said the Nissan Patrol was heading for Abu Dhabi when it hit the Toyota Land Cruiser, adding that it flew above the barrier and landed on the opposite end of the road.

“We found systems inside the Nissan, including a computer and other tools for increasing the car’s speed…these types of systems usually affect the safety and balance of the vehicles,” he said, adding that police are investigating the accident to determine whether it involved stunt performance by those drivers.

Zafin did not identify the killed driver but said the mishap could have caused a disaster had that car hit other vehicles on a road where the speed limit is 140 kph.

His figures showed 121 people were killed on Dubai’s roads in the first eight months of this year and 122 through 2012.
