A drug dealer shocked the judge at an Abu Dhabi court when he reached for a pencil on the court secretary’s desk and tried to slash his vein to end his life.
The judge quickly shouted to the policemen, who jumped at the defendant and grabbed the pencil off him before he could hurt himself.
The Arabic language daily Al Bayan said the unnamed defendant tried to commit a suicide after he thought the judge would uphold a previous court ruling and sentence him to four years in prison after rejecting his pleas to be sent to a medical centre for treatment of drug addiction.
“The judge could have charged the defendant of attempting a suicide but he did not because of his bad psychological condition,” the paper said.
