DSS kicks off with glittering ceremony

Millions in prize money, hefty shopping discounts, endless fun and entertainment and the return of that precious yellow fur ball called Modhesh can only mean another year of Dubai Summer Surprises is ready to kick off in style.

Tonight’s opening ceremony at the waterfall area in The Dubai Mall at 7.30pm will present the 14 th edition of the summer festival, which runs until... Laser displays, sound shows, and a host of entertainment activities are in store for all those who make their way through the crowds.

Ibrahim Saleh, Festivals General Coordinator and Deputy CEO of Dubai Events and Promotions Establishment, said in a statement: “In its fourteenth edition, Dubai Summer Surprises hopes to offer a bigger and better experience to visitors as Dubai has become the main tourist destination for holiday this summer. Dubai Events and Promotions Establishment aims to provide visitors and residents a bunch of surprises and activities to reflect this year’s slogan: ‘An Unforgettable Summer in Dubai’.”

Highlighting the retail aspect of Dubai Summer Surprises 2011, Saleh said: “This year’s Summer Surprises gives visitors many chances to win several prizes. With fabulous promotions across 6,000 retail outlets and with entertaining events planned, visitors are in for an exceptional shopping experience.”

What to expect tonight

The hour-long opening ceremony celebration will also feature young children as a part of a group dance performance, based on five different themes: namely the environment, followed by a dance centred on sports, fashion and glamour, culture and finally, a futuristic look at technology.

Furthermore, characters from the international cartoon show LazyTown will be performing a live musical. For those not in the know, LazyTown is a children’s motivational concept that assists young ones to be active and make positive life choices.

Naturally, no opening ceremony can be complete without the fun-loving Modhesh on hand to brighten up the proceedings.

And that’s not all folks...

Several activities are planned across different at The Dubai Mall itself, as part of the EPIC exhibition. EPIC, an abbreviation for “Eco-Wise, Progressive, Intelligent Consumer”, will highlight the need for sustainable consumerism.

The EPIC initiative and Sustainable Living Expo covers a varied range of categories including fashion and accessories, food and beverage, leisure and travel, home and garden, health and beauty, business and technology, transportation, and government. EPIC provides a platform to thousands of savvy shoppers and smart business operators to inspire sustainable consumer behaviour.

Also saunter over to the Fashion Catwalk Stage where a host of musical performances, including hip-hop performers await you.

Well-known chefs from various restaurants in Dubai will host cookery demonstrations at the promenade area outside The Dubai Mall. Chefs will display their culinary skills and share organic food recipes with the audience. 

Meanwhile, Dubai Electricity and Water Authority and Juma-Al Majid are organising workshops for children who will be taught eco-friendly tips, while Kidzania, Bee’ah, and Dubai Garden Centre will hold recycling activities.
