Du deadline: TRA to the rescue, extends SIM registration deadline

The Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA) has confirmed the extension of the deadline for the SIM registration of mobile subscribers.

Etisalat and Du will extend the timeframe for the first category and include it in the second category due date since the licensees were unable to provide smooth mechanisms to facilitate, accelerate and stimulate subscribers to update their data.

Furthermore, the TRA instructed the licensees to improve their mechanisms and increase the capabilities of all their commercial outlets where subscribers can easily access those locations to update their information.

The TRA also instructed the operators to speed up the launch of the online registration services to accelerate the process and ease the load on the commercial outlets.

The TRA encourages all subscribers to come forward and update their information in order to safeguard their privacy to avoid getting into legal or financial accountabilities caused by the misuse of those numbers by others.

The campaign 'My Number, My Identity' was launched by the TRA in cooperation with licensees in the UAE - Etisalat and Du - to raise awareness about the new procedures governing registration requirements for subscribers to get SIM cards and mobile services from licensees. (Wam)

Register today, or lose your Du mobile number: No extension for SIM registration

The deadline of the first batch of du subscribers that are required to register their SIM card is today and no grace period has been announced.

"The allocated SIM registration period for the first group of customers expires on October 16, 2012, and we would like to thank all of our customers who have visited our Shops and partner outlets to complete their registration.

"All those who have been invited to register their line in the first group but have not yet done so are encouraged to visit any of our dedicated 250 locations – du Shops and partners – across the UAE, by October 16, 2012.

"Customers from this group with unregistered SIM cards after that period will have their line suspended," announced the telecommunication company.

Du and etisalat are currently carrying out the process of registering nearly 12.5 million mobile phone subscribers as part of the 'My number, My Identity' scheme ordered by Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA).

October 16 is also the first deadline set by etisalat, but it announced two days ago that the subscribers who had not yet registered their SIM cards would be given a grace period of unknown duration.

Etisalat advises that there will not be a service disconnection on October 16, 2012; this will be delayed until further notice," said Iyad Hasan Ahmad Al Zoubi, public relations manager for etisalat. It is unclear when the next deadline will be.

The entire process is set to take 18 months during which subscribers will receive an SMS message when it is 'their turn' to register the SIM card, which they have to do within the time frame given.

"In line with the Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA)’s 'My Number My Identity' campaign, we are communicating directly with customers in batches and have allocated specific time lines for them to register with us," says a Du spokesperson.

"Disconnected lines can be reinstated within three months of the line being suspended, by simply visiting any du shop to re-register." (Majorie van Leijen)
