Dubai airport officials arrested a gang of Georgian nationals while they attempted to smuggle huge quantity of gold jewellery and valuable watches outside the country.

They were trying to smuggle out 1.5kg of gold ornaments and expensive watches hidden in their undergarments, according to officials.

One of them looked nervous as he passed through the security check at Terminal Two, which prompted officials to watch him closely.

He was taken to a private room for thorough check after the metal detector beeped. Some gold and a few expensive watches were seized from his person.

Later, CCTV footages showed he had entered with two other men.

It was discovered that the valuables were distributed among the gang.

Major General Ahmad Mohammad bin Thani, Director of the General Department of Airport Security, was all praise for the airport security personnel. Their vigilance and training has helped nab such smuggling bids, he said.

A team headed by Brigadier General Ali Atiq bin Lahej, deputy director of airport security department, in coordination with Special Task Intervention Unit at the Airport Security of Dubai Police nabbed the others.
