A Dubai Ambulance that was on its way rushing a pregnant woman - in her advanced stages of labour – to hospital was faced with an unexpected incident. An accident on the road resulted in paramedics attending to an extra patient.

Speaking to ‘Emirates24|7’, Saeeda Buti Saeed, Head of Regulations and Licensing at Dubai Corporation for Ambulance Services (DCAS), who was onboard the ambulance at the time of the incident, said: “A car in front of us braked, which caused us to hit our brakes, but then there was another car behind us that crashed into our vehicle.”

She recalled that the person in the car behind the ambulance hit his head on the dashboard and sustained minor injuries and was bleeding.

“We had to leave our first patient as the crew rushed her to hospital. While, we called another ambulance for second patient. The ambulance arrived in six minutes,” she added.

She explained that paramedics attended to the injured motorist to check if he was suffering from internal bleeding and stabilised him before the second ambulance arrived and took him to hospital.

“When you are in an accident, you do not feel the effects immediately, “ Saeeda said.

That’s why patients involved must be taken to hospital and checked thoroughly, she added.

“One big problem we paramedics face is when people follow ambulances. They do it because it’s an easy access for them to move quickly through the roads and escape traffic. It is very rare that our ambulances get involved in accidents, it happens when other drivers cannot see us parked on the side of the road, or they follow us closely as we rush to take patients to hospitals,” explained Dr Omar Al Sakaf, Director of Medical and Technical Affairs at DCAS.
