Dubai has started upgrading its taxi metres to include more passenger services within the emirate’s plan to switch to e-city that will see quicker public facilities and services, the semi-official daily ‘Al Ittihad’ reported on Saturday.

The emirate, the Gulf’s main commercial and business centre, has already changed the metres of nearly 300 taxi cabs and the metres of nearly half the vehicles will be updated through 2015, it said, quoting Yousuf Al Ali, CEO of the Road and Transport Authority.

“We expect to complete the project in 2017, when the metres of 8,997 taxi cabs in the emirate will have been changed,” he said.
“The project includes introducing new services and choices to the passengers in line with plans by the government to switch to e-city.”
