Dubai Police recovered 18 cars, including luxury models, from Oman that were smuggled out from the UAE on fake documents, reported ‘Al Khaleej’.

Some of these cars are mortgaged to banks and were reported stolen. However, investigations confirmed that they were smuggled out by owners to evade installments.

Major-General Khamis Mattar Al Mazina, Commander-in-chief of Dubai Police, said cooperation between Dubai Police and authorities in other countries in the region helped nab culprits and seize vehicles.

Major-General Khalil Ibrahim Al-Mansouri, Assistant Commander-in-Chief of Dubai Police for Criminal Investigation, confirmed that these cars were reported stolen in the earlier.

Investigations led to a gang of Arabs and Asians who specialise in stealing cars. Maj. Gen. Al Mansouri said some of these cars were smuggled with the knowledge of the owners to evade bank payments.

Some of these cars were displayed for sale in Oman and others were seized while they were being re-exported to other countries. All those involved in the operations have been arrested, he added.

Maj. Gen. Al Mansouri said the gang used fake documents of a fake company to smuggle out cars. In most cases, owners pay one or two premiums and sell the car to the gang and leave the country. In such cases, banks will not be able to discover the theft until after several months of not receiving payments. But by then the vehicles would no longer be in the UAE, he explained.

Maj.Gen. Al Mansouri appealed to public not to buy cars at cheap prices and get involved in such crime. He urged public to ensure the documents are correct and if mortgaged to any bank, it is important to ensure the bank has given approval for transfer.
