Dubai Creek gives up 3.4 tonnes of waste a day

Dubai Municipality collected around 1,000 tonnes of waste from the beginning of this year until this week, compared to 674 tonnes last year.

This works out to almost 3.4 tonnes of garbage collected each day of this year so far.

Yaqoob Al Ali, Head of Specialised Cleaning Section at Dubai Municipality, told Emirates 24|7 that the targeted average daily waste from Dubai Creek is about three tonnes. “However, the amount we collect daily is below three tonnes. This changes in case of accidents.”

He pointed out that the waste collected from Dubai Creek generally comes from three sources. “The first and most common source is the waste that falls into the Creek from the loading and unloading shipments from boats and abras on Dubai Creek. The second source is from tourism and transportation boats and abras in the Creek that throw waste in to the waters while cleaning these boats. And the third source is drowning or fire accidents which takes place in boats and dhows on the Creek,” said Al Ali.

He added that despite the fact that they have many inspectors at the Creek, they still can’t fine many violators as most of the violations takes place at night.

“We have a set of fines for violators. These range from Dh500 for throwing litter into the Creek to Dh5,000 for throwing oil and petroleum products into the waters.”

Al Ali pointed out that the pollution level in the Creek water has increased because of these factors, plus the fact that the Creek water does not have any circulation as water comes from one side and the other side is closed. “However, when the new project of Road and Transport Authority which is planning to open the other part of the Creek for new projects, things will change and the level of pollution will decrease because of the good circulation of water in the Creek.”
