Dubai Customs has foiled a bid to smuggle a large amount of narcotics into the local market on a flight coming from an Asian country.

Omar Ahmed Al Muhairi, Senior Manager of Air Cargo Operations at Dubai Customs, said that seizure took place when customs inspectors at the Free Zone Inspection Center at Dubai International Airport were performing a regular inspection and suspected a cache of 35 cartons weighing 863kg.

They found 1.5 million tablets inside. The importing company has a general trade license and is not authorised to import medicine increased their suspicions.

On transferring a sample of the seized medicine to the Ministry of Health, the report stated that the tablets are listed under category one of controlled substances and is not allowed to be taken without a prescription.

As for the seized quantity, it exceeds the permitted limit of medical intake; besides, such imports require pre-obtained permission, a procedure that was not carried out by the importing company.

A Wam report stated that such tablets are targeted at youth and students causing addiction when used excessively.
