The three Mexicans and a Venezuelan national who were arrested in Dubai for stealing diamonds at an exhibition in India have been deported to India.

They are scheduled to be produced before a Mumbai court once they reach there.

“A police team from Mumbai flew into Dubai to escort the arrested gang members back to India,” said Sanjay Verma, India’s Consul General in Dubai.

The Dubai Police following a tip off arrested the four who suspected to be part of an international crime syndicate.

The gang, which includes a woman, stole diamonds worth $1.4million form the stall of Israeli Jewellery company Dalumi at the India International Jewellery Show in Goregaon, near Mumbai.

A senior Dubai Police official said they were able to quickly trace the criminals following the leads given by Indian officials.

Major Gen Khamis al Mazeina, the Dubai deputy police chief said, “It was a quick job as the exact details of the criminals were made available,” he said.

Speaking to Emirates 24|7 on Wednesday Mazeina had said that the extradition process would be completed at the earliest and the arrested would be

flown to India before midnight.

Meanwhile, media reports quoting Indian police officials say the arrested are professionals belonging to an international diamond cartel.

“There is hardly a doubt that they are professionals. We have to see whether they belong to any larger gang operating globally,” said Himanshu Roy,

joint commissioner of police, crime told Hindustan Times.

Roy said the gang had precise details of the show and had planned the heist in advance.

On Monday, the foursome visited the show posing as members of the gem and jewellery industry.

As the men kept the staff engaged in a conversation about the products, the woman picked up a box of diamonds and the group left undetected.

They left India on a Mumbai-Dubai-Hamburg flight soon after the incident.

Mumbai police said they cracked the case after going through hours of CCTV footage and identifying the culprits.

The thieves had swallowed the diamonds to avoid detection at Mumbai airport.
