Dubai Municipality may have intensified their drive to evict single men and women from family-designated areas, but their reach is limited only to non-freehold areas.

Issues relating to overcrowding in apartments across freehold areas like Palm Jumeirah, Discovery Gardens, International City and Jumeirah Lakes Towers are under the purview of Trakhees, the organisational arm of Ports, Customs and Free Zone Corporation, Emirates 24|7 can reveal.

“As Palm Jumeirah, Discovery Gardens, International City and Jumeirah Lakes Towers Residential areas are part of Dubai World and Trakhees is the regulatory authority, all these areas are regularly monitored and inspected for any violation related to overcrowding by Trakhees-EHS overcrowding section only,” a company spokesman said.

Trakhees also supervises residential communities such as Jumeirah Heights, Jumeirah Village and Jebel Ali Downtown.

The spokesman clarified that Dubai Municipality can forward any complaint for any violation related to overcrowding to Trakhees-EHS and if they wish they can join the inspection team along with Trakhees overcrowding section.

Media reports earlier said that the Dubai Municipality had begun a 60-day focus on Al Badaa, and Al Jafiliya and Al Rashidiya neighbourhood with the campaign targeting single, or married men and women, living without their families in family-designated areas.

Trakhees spokesman emphasised that it was monitoring violation for overcrowding, i.e. one person per 200 square feet regulation, similar to the regulation followed by the Dubai Municipality.

“If occupants of any apartment violate the above rules, the occupants/lease holder of apartment is served with warning notice for non-compliance and accordingly given adequate time to follow and comply with the requirement,” he added.

Violators can face fines of between Dh1,000 and Dh50,000.
