Using another person’s health insurance card for treatment is illegal, Dr Ali Ahmed Mashael, Grand Mufti at the Islamic Affairs and Charitable Activities Department in Dubai, has said, while answering a query posed by a resident.

The Fatwa Department at the Islamic Affairs and Charitable Activities Department in Dubai (IACAD) has explained that the use of health insurance card by anyone other than its rightful owner is forbidden.

A resident wanted to know if he could use his health card to buy medicines and for his mother’s medical treatment here, as she did not have an insurance card and because he couldn’t afford the cost as his income is low.

Dr Mashael explained that using one’s card to cover another’s health issues is an act of fraud and in violation of the terms agreed upon with the insurance firm.

This year, so far, the IACAD has received 1,247 questions related to matters of life and religion, of which 325 queries were on contemporary issues.
