Dubai Grand Mufti’s fatwa on use of office stationery for personal use

Do you find yourself repeatedly taking reams of printouts in office for your children’s school work? Do you believe it’s alright to take home office stationery, such as pencils, pens, printing paper, highlighters, etc.?

Personal use of employer’s stationery by government or private sector employees is not allowed, except with permission, according to a new fatwa issued the Islamic Affairs and Charitable Activities Department (IACAD) in Dubai.

Dr. Ali Ahmed Mashael, Grand Mufti at Dubai Fatwa Section of the IACAD, noted this when a clarification was sought from him on the issue of employees printing their personal documents on official stationery, in light of Shari’ah laws.

Dr Mashael said official stationery is the property of the employer and it is not appropriate for employees to use it for their personal use.

The employer’s property can be used by employees for their personal needs only with permission of the management. Even after approval, such use should not be excessive, he added.

This fatwa can be viewed under the head ‘various issues’ at IACAD’s website, which includes answers to 1,330 queries sought during the current year.
