Dubai's human rights authorities have recovered nearly Dh23.2 million in delayed wages for local workers from their employers in 15 months in line with instructions ordered by the leadership to guarantee all rights for foreign workers in the emirate.

The funds were recovered in  2014 and the first three months of 2015, bringing the total delayed payments recovered by authorities for expatriate workers to nearly Dh256 million during 209-2014, according to a Dubai police report.

The report, released by the human rights division at Dubai's police, showed Dh21.5 million was recovered and paid to the workers in 2014 while about Dh1.74m was secured in the first quarter of this year.

The report, published in the Arabic language daily 'Al Khaleej', said a new programme introduced by the human rights section under the name ‘guarantee rights’ has handled workers’ financial problems and other 'legitimate rights.

"The programme focuses on violations of labourers' rights to identify problems and tackle them…most of those problems over the past period involved delayed wages to the workers by their employers," said Major Saeed Al Hilli, head of the workers’ control section at the human rights division.
