Secretary General of the Dubai Economic Council, H.E. Hani Al Hamli, recently attended the second annual World Peace Forum (WPF)- "International Security in a Changing World: Peace, Development, Innovation," organized by Tsinghua University, Beijing, China.

The WPF is the first high-level international security forum organized by a Chinese institution. The forum is held annually at Tsinghua in the summer with the purpose of providing world strategists a platform to discuss international security issues, on how to deal with global or regional security threats, how to strengthen international security cooperation and how to achieve lasting peace.

The event focuses on international security trends, innovative approaches to the maintenance of international security, international security areas of collaboration, and the development of international security relations with in-depth discussion.

Al Hamli stated that peace and security are prerequisites for any development process. “Most challenges facing many countries worldwide in development domain are due to the absence of peace and political instability” he added.

Al Hamli stressed that the UAE has established itself as a ‘model’ for healthy political and safety, the two elements stem besides other drivers to turn the country as a regional and global hub of business and finance.

Triad of peace, development and innovation

Al Hamli pointed out that the title of the event reflects the strong links between peace, development and innovation. In this context, he stated that the economic development cannot be secured without stable security and political environment, and that the sustainable security would enhance the business climate, and subsequently affects positively on the growth rate and employment.

He claims all countries to adopt peaceful coexistence and tend to avoid clashes.

Pillars of the UAE Development

Hani Al Hamli said that the UAE economic development is cited on human capital development strategy through providing modern education and training for the citizens in addition to competitiveness and innovative-driven policies. He also stated that the “internal” development of the country has entwined with external policy that based on peace, diplomacy and mutual respects with all countries worldwide.

Economic and political globalization dualism

Al Hamli argues that one distinctive imbalance in the current international order is the “dualism” in economic and political globalization. In the time that international organisations call for ‘globalizing’ the local economies which entails freeing the movement of trade, capital, labor and information across borders, we can see “non-globalization” in the political globalization and irresponsible positions by some countries.

He alleged that such phenomena will damage the global stability.

Future horizons

Al Hamli said that that there are many real challenges facing the globe which require immediate cooperation between all countries to tackle, such as climate change, foreign indebtedness, poverty, unemployment, to name a few. He also stated that peace and development theory should be reflected in the foreign policy of countries not just words.
