Dubai Municipality has asked shopping malls in the emirates to separately collect recyclable waste from its origin.

The new directions was announced by Abdul Majeed Saifaie, Director, Waste Management Department at the municipality, in a forum organised for representatives of shopping malls, held in Dubai Chamber of Commerce and Industry, recently.

“We have to intensify our efforts to promote the culture of recycle and reuse. We have many technologies to recycle things and reduce overall waste generation,” said Saifaie.  “To make collection and recycling procedure of waste, the segregation should be done from its origin.”

The municipality will soon be distributing approved containers to shopping malls collect segregated waste. From 2013 February, the initiative will be fully implemented.

Saifaie said a special team from the Waste Management Department of the municipality will carry out inspections to ensure the new directions are complied with.
