Nearly 15,000 men had plastic surgeries at private medical centres in Dubai in 2012 and most of the operations involved reducing fat, skin polishing and correcting face deformities, according to the Emirate’s Health Authority.

The figure is nearly double that in 2011, when around 7,000 men were reported to have visited plastic therapy centres in the emirate, prompting authorities to warn citizens against unauthorised centres and subsequent complications.

In a report published in the Arabic language daily Emarat Al Youm, the Authority said 6,000 Emirati men had plastic surgeries in 2012 while the rest were expatriates. In 2011, they included 2,000 Emiratis and 5,000 foreigners.

“Patients visiting such centres should ensure they are authorised to practice this type of therapy and the doctors there are experienced enough in this field,” it said.

It said plastic therapy centres offered 13 different services to those men, including reducing body fat, removing hair by laser, polishing and softening skin, beautifying the hair and other parts of the body, and correcting deformity in the nose and other organs.
