Dubai has emerged as the only city in the region to host the ‘Wings for Life World Run’, whose proceeds will support the cause to find a cure for spinal cord injuries that affects nearly three million people around the world.

The global race is set to take place on the May 3, 2015.

Starting from sunrise to sunset, joggers, celebrities, marathon runners, triathletes and ultra-marathon runners will pass through 13 time zones, running for those who can’t, say organisers.

The Wings for Life World Run, spanning 35 locations on six continents, is aimed at raising awareness and funds for the Wings for Life foundation, a not-for-profit spinal cord research foundation that aims to find a cure for spinal cord injuries.

Colin Jackson, a former world-class athlete known to be the best hurdle in his prime, and now the International Sports Director for the Wings for Life World Run, said in a statement: “What we’re trying to achieve is genuine: running for those who can’t. The title says it all.”

He continued: “Spinal cord injury could happen to anyone. Everyone is an awkward slip or fall away from a shocking, life-changing accident. And there’s not enough investment into research about it.

“We need to raise money so we can capture the best scientists who will stick around and make a real difference in people’s lives.”

Since 2004, Wings for Life funds life-changing research projects and clinical trials around the globe.

While a cure is still to be found, the movement raised $4 million during its inaugural Wings for Life World Run held simultaneously in 13 time zones, earlier this year.

The leading cause for spinal injury are traffic accidents and falls, say organisers.
