Dubai Police caution parents

Incidents of rash driving and accidents during school run has forced Dubai educators to step in, and ask parents to exert caution on the roads.

Recent reports of a driver ramming an SUV into a school bus parked near Emirates International School has only further highlight the problem.

Educators have urged parents to be extra cautious while dropping off and picking up their children from school.

While school-runs can possibly be stressful for parents, it is advisable to plan the journey way in advance to avert any last-minute hiccups.

A British school in Dubai sent out a circular asking parents to be more courteous to other drivers and students. “I ask every single parent to observe road courtesy; not to climb your car on the side-walk; not to double-park and not to honk at other cars.

“The safety of our children is very, very important,” read the message from the principal.

Dubai Police also tweeted the need to focus on road safety. “Dear driver: stop and obey signals from school crossing guards in the road and co-operate with them for the safety of our kids,” read a recent tweet from their official handle.

It is alleged that many parents ignore traffic rules, so that they can make it in time for their child’s school. “It’s scary how fast some parents drive around school zones. Why would you risk the lives of others?” asked a parent.

The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) informed that “the speed limit on all local roads is 40kph which includes areas where schools are. However all schools areas were supplied with additional warning signs, flashers, speed limit and school signs in addition to pedestrian crossings and speed bumps.”
