Desperate to circumvent rules, avoid traffic fines and detection by police, a motorist from a neighbouring Gulf country had his car confiscated by the Dubai Police because he had tampered with the licence plate.

Speaking to Emirates 24|7, Director of Naif Police Station, Lt Col Abdullah Khadem Suroor Al Masam, said police officials confiscated the car with disfigured number plates.

He warned that as part of a campaign under the direction of Brigadier Khalil Ibrahim Al Mansouri, Director of General Department of Criminal Investigation, Dubai Police, any vehicle, including two-wheelers, would be impounded and the owner liable for action if number plates are tampered with or even ‘touched-up’ in any way.

Colonel Suroor said that the car in the above case was speeding and when a patrol car from the Naif Station stopped it, they found the plates tampered with.

He attributed the evasion of payment of traffic fines and the circumventing of radars and speed cameras as key reasons motorists risk breaking the law.

Colonel Suroor warned vehicle owners not to resort to such fraudulent methods, as it would expose them to legal liabilities and even a case of felony.
