Dubai could soon enforce ammendments to its real estate law intended to hasten procedures for the settlement of property disputes between landlords and tenants and allow for an appeal within three days, a newspaper reported on Tuesday.

The committee for the settlement of rent disputes has presented a draft of the amendments to the government with the aim of slashing time needed to resolve rent rifts and stimulate the market in the region’s business and trade hub.

“The committee has drafted a new amendment to the law which was presented to the competent authorities. We expect it to be enforced before the end of September,” the committee’s chairman Saeed Al Kindi said, was quoted as saying by Emarat Al Youm daily.

“The new amendments were prompted by market developments which necessitate expediting procedures to settle disputes. The law also allows the parties which do not accept the committee’s verdict to appeal within three days in order to reach acceptable decisions in a short period of time.”

Kindi said the committee had tackled nearly 4,000 disputes and most of them involved failure by tenants to pay rent.

He said the committee would form four sub panels within a week to tackle rent disputes and save time, adding that they could handle 35-40 cases a day.

“What we seek in our work is mercy, justice and the strict application of the law. Satisfying all the parties is a difficult issue but we are trying our best.”
