As Dubai residents brought the emirate to a standstill last night with the historic win as the host city for Expo 2020, celebrations were not limited to the spectacular fireworks that Emaar spearheaded down the Burj Khalifa.

Retailers too jumped in to celebrate the win, with several stepping up to offer freebies, discounts and more.

Baskin Robbins’ promise earlier in the day to offer free ice cream to residents if Dubai won the bid, gained popularity to such a degree that the company name even hit the number two position, right after hashtag, DubaiExpo2020 for its sweet offer.

The popular ice cream chain stated it will be offering everyone free ice creams tomorrow between 1pm and 3pm.

Residents lauded the celebratory move, with people like Faris Sibai tweeting: “Remember to head to your local Baskin Robbins parlour today between 1 and 3 to collect your free ice cream celebrating Dubai Expo2020.”

Joseph Makhoul wrote: “Baskin Robbins Expo 2020: get ready for scoops of glory. Dubai stands tall among the world.”

It seems like a fitting contribution to some, considering the big scoop during 1904’s Expo in St Louis saw the unveiling of the edible ice-cream cone.

Meanwhile, Spin Dubai, which is owned by Hollywood heavyweight, Susan Sarandon, is offering its own free deals for patrons.

The ping pong themed restaurant, which is known to hide a celebrity or two across its US chain, will offer free ping pong from 6pm until close at its outlet in Dubai Wafi Pyramids.

Also, online electronics retailer, Jado Pado, has served up discounts to all its customers until 6pm today to celebrate the win.

JadoPado tweeted on its official handle: “In celebration of the Dubai’s Expo2020 win, we’re giving away a little discount! Coupon: jpExpo2020.”

The discount offers Dh20 off on products purchased above the value of Dh500 and bought before 6pm.
