Dubai roads are safer: Traffic-related deaths decline

9% fall in fatal mishaps last year compared to that of previous year

The number of traffic related deaths in Dubai declined, according to a top official.

Major-General Mohammed Saif Al Zafeen, Director of General Administration of Traffic, Dubai, said: "The fall in the number traffic accidents is a positive sign that proves we are moving to achieve Dubai 2020 vision of zero deaths per 100 thousand."

Last year saw only 122 deaths as compared to 134 in 2011, which is a 9 per cent drop from that of the previous year, he said and added that the awareness campaign will continue to educate motorists about safe driving.
 
Majority of accidents are a result of speeding, said Maj-Gen Al Zafeen.
 
Male drivers caused 1,330 accidents, resulting in the death of 116 people and injuring 2,161 others last year. While female drivers caused 138 incidents, resulted in 5 deaths and injuring 220 people.
 
There were 17 hit n run cases that claimed one life and injured 21 people.
 
Not leaving minimum distance between two vehicles resulted in 479 accidents that claimed 13 lives and caused injuries to 410 others.
 
About 473 cases of sudden deviations on roads were recorded. such instances caused 21 deaths and hurt 495 people.
 
Noncompliance to lane discipline caused 299 mishaps claiming 6 lives, while lack of concentration while driving claimed 4 lives.
 
Among the offenders, Indian drivers caused 31 deaths in 340 accidents, injuring 566 in 2012.
 
Emirati drivers followed second being responsible for 29 deaths from 292 mishaps.
 
Pakistani drivers came third causing 340 accidents that claimed 26 lives.
 
There were 343 run-over cases reported last year, leading to 49 deaths, while vehicle faults resulted in 140 accidents and 7 deaths.
 
The deceased were all aged between 27 and 35 years of age, he added.
