Dubai’s achievements praised at World Climate Summit

Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, Vice Chairman of the Dubai Supreme Council of Energy and MD & CEO of Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (Dewa), stressed in his speech delivered during the opening session of the World Climate Summit held in Warsaw, Poland, that the vision of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, was formed by announcing The Dubai Declaration of ‘Energy For All to call for 22 October to marked as World Energy Day.

This declaration is a new starting point to develop the mechanics and frameworks of sharing expertise with countries of the world through international organisations, government authorities, international partnerships and all other organisations that seek to achieve the common good of humanity, and the relentless pursuit towards the sensible and rational use of energy for the global economy.

Al Tayer stressed that Dewa has made unprecedented achievements surpassing the best European and US companies in terms of efficiency and reliability in line with Dubai Integrated Energy Strategy 2030 that aims to diversify sources of energy, reduce energy consumption by 30%, and reduce more than 5 million tons of carbon emissions.

World Climate Summit was inaugurated by a speech given by Janusz Piechociński, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Economy of the Republic of Poland, who discussed the importance of promoting international collaboration to combat climate change, and support for the business sector in leading the transformation to a low-carbon-emission economy, which is one of the key factors of competitiveness and innovation. Dubai’s excellent achievements came at the top of the agenda of this global event.

Al Tayer’s speech during the opening session was well received. Also, Dubai’s leading initiatives in the field of reducing carbon emissions and increasing energy efficiency was praised by speakers and delegates at the Summit. The session was chaired by Joan McNaughton, Executive Chair of the World Energy Council Policy Assessment, and was attended by Harry Verhaar, Senior Director Energy & Climate Change, Philips Lighting, and Finn Mortensen, Executive Director of State of Green.

The two-day World Climate Summit was held at the same time as COP19, an International convention to combat climate change, which is part of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change. This Summit was attended by a large number of international leaders representing governments, private sector and international and financial organisations. Dubai participated in this global event with a high-level delegation led by Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, along with representatives from the Dubai Supreme Council of Energy, Dewa and the Dubai Green Economy Partnership.
