UAE’s famous Dragon Market had a key restaurant and café shut down after it was caught preparing juice in the toilet.

The Dubai Department of Planning and Development said it had closed the restaurant until further notice after it verified reports that its workers used the bathroom in the sprawling mall to prepare juice for the customers.

Officials said they were could not confirm the workers used toilet water to add it to the juice but that they relied on pictures showing the workers with the juice in the toilet.

The decision to shut the unnamed restaurant at the mall, a major destination for shoppers from the UAE and other Gulf states, followed a report published in the Dubai-based Arabic language daily Emarat Al Youm, which relied on pictures by an Emirati visitor to the mall last week, according to the paper.

It quoted the shopper as saying he was just leaving the mall when he saw the restaurant workers going into the toilet with a trolley laden with juice bottles.

“We have verified the report published in Emarat Al Youm and sent our inspectors to watch the restaurant. They found that the restaurant was involved in hygienic and safety violations…we then decided to shut it down until further notice,” said Madiha Salim, director of the environment and health division at the department.

A restaurant in Saudi Arabia served customers with bread partly eaten by a cat after it was placed by the bakery worker near the door in the early hours of the morning.

A Saudi man going for morning prayers saw the cat ripping the bread plastic bag and biting off pieces before it ran away when the restaurant opened.

“The man phoned health inspectors after he waited and saw that the Bangladeshi worker served the customers with that bread,” the Arabic language daily Sabq said, adding that the worker was arrested and that action would be taken against the restaurant in the western town of Taif.
