Dubai’s drive to distinction: How to prove you’re a good driver

You are a perfect driver. You have sufficient driving experience, have no serious traffic offences on your name, and want to brag about it. How do you prove it?

Dubai’s Road and Transport Authority (RTA) has introduced the Driver History Certificate, a document listing the traffic tickets that were issued on your name over the past two years.

The certificate comes as an addition to the Driver Experience Certificate, which was already in place, and can only be issued in combination with the latter.

“The Driver Experience Certificate shows for how long somebody has had a driving license in the UAE. However, this does not say anything about his or her driving style.

“If somebody wants to show that he has a good history of driving, he can request the Driver History Certificate as a complimentary addition to the Driver Experience Certificate,” explains Steve Venning, who developed the service for the Licensing Department of RTA.

The certificate, which was introduced end last year, can provide a useful tool in several situations, he explains.

“I believe that insurance companies sometimes ask if the person has a good standing of driving before they agree to provide coverage. Now the driver is able to prove his good standing of driving.”

“Sometimes, people are asked to show evidence of good driving when they migrate and want to transfer their license. I believe this is another reason for people to request the document.”

Residents who apply for a position as a driver are often asked for their driving qualities, and will now be able to show these qualities on paper, he added.

Drivers with a truly good history of driving will benefit from the service, but when traffic offences have been made, it might prove less rewarding.

At the moment, only the number of traffic offenses will be mentioned on the certificate, but details of the offence will soon be added to the information.

“If the driver was the cause of a car crash, this will be mentioned on the certificate,” warns Steve.

The certificate can be requested online and at the RTA customer service points, and only as an additional service to the Driver Experience Certificate, which costs Dh50.
