Dubai is planning to set up solar-powered ‘Eco Walks’ that will offer pedestrians a “cool and shaded” trail to Dubai Metro stations.
The concept designs of the Eco Walks were displayed at Cityscape Global.
A Dubai Municipality official at the event told ‘Emirates24|7’ that the concept designs were ready, but no decision had been taking on when construction will start.
Dubai Municipality did not respond to questions sent by this website.
Hussain Nasser Lootah, Director-General, Dubai Municipality, in June last year, said the Eco Walk project aims to exploit solar energy to provide a comfortable environment for pedestrian traffic especially in summer.
It provides an innovative design for umbrellas installed on the sidewalks along with shading and cooling fans, which reduces the temperature. The project will also provide services for pedestrians, such as refrigerators, drinking water, and automated teller machines using solar modules mounted on umbrellas.
Besides, the cost-effective design provides possibilities of multiple advertisement and offers three alternatives for the outside structure of umbrellas to fit the sites,” Lootah said.
The project is part of the Dubai Municipality initiative to promote sustainable development using alternative and clean energy, and promotes sustainable transport facilitating pedestrian’s movement to Dubai Metro stations.
