Six rest stops for trucks have been completed by Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) on Emirates Road, Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Road, and Hatta-Oman Road, in line with its plan to establish 24 parking facilities on main roads for truckers through the emirate.

The newly constructed rest stops add up to a total capacity of 160 parking slots, with the aim of providing a place for parking trucks safely manner, allowing truckers to take a rest from their sometimes long trips.

Three of the stops are located on Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Road, of which one is in the direction of Dubai and two in the direction of Abu Dhabi – in Nad Al Hammar and Jebel Ali. Two more stops are located on both sides of Emirates Road, while one stop has been constructed on the Hatta-Oman Road at Hibab Roundabout.

“The locations of these stops are selected in accordance with certain criteria such as that they have to be on highways and near petrol stations to ensure the availability of basic services to drivers,” said Maitha bin Udai, CEO of RTA’s Traffic and Roads Agency.

According to the plan, six new rest stops will be constructed in 2015, for which the locations are currently being selected. Another six stops will be constructed in 2016.

Driver fatigue has been the reason behind a number of fatal crashes in the country, and experts have said that rest stops are needed to provide truck drivers with safe stops along the route.

“Apart from the stops which are currently being constructed, the RTA has completed the design of integrated rest rooms equipped with security personnel and guards around the clock. The facilities also include various services that meet the needs of drivers and workers such as hotel rooms, petrol stations, medical clinic, shops and maintenance services,” Maitha said.

The first such rest house will be located at the intersection of Emirates Road with Trucks Road, the second will be in both directions of the Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Road near Dubai International City, and the third at Jebel Ali – Lihbab Road.
