Following  the heavy  loss of lives in recent serious road accidents involving trucks, Dubai Traffic Police has decided to step up monitoring of truck drivers and the movement of heavy vehicles on the emirate’s roads.

Colonel Saif Mohair Al Mazrouei, Director-General of Dubai Traffic Police, said the emirate’s roads are facing many problems because truck drivers are not following traffic rules closely. The traffic police has decided to step up patrols along some roads and arrest truck drivers violating traffic rules.

Col. Mazrouei said he had directed traffic patrols to show zero tolerance towards any violation of rules by truck drivers regarding condition of tyres, transit timings, pedestrian crossings or standing on road shoulders etc.

He said the traffic police had fined 1,028 truck drivers for absence of red lights in the rear of the vehicle. Other violations included lack of reflective stickers (931 offences), straying from the lane for heavy vehicles (880), blocking movement of traffic (854), entering places prohibited for heavy vehicles (796), failure to indicate change in direction (789), using mobile phone while driving (786), driving without seat belt (758), not writing loads on the sides of vehicles (741), lack of number plates in designated places (674), damaged lights (620), driving suspended vehicles (555) and other violations of rules (5,185).
