Dubai Municipality has approved creation of five parks in residential areas during 2016 at a cost of Dh37 million, according to a report in the Arabic daily newspaper Emarat Al Youm.

The municipality also said parks for people with special needs will be set up by the middle of this year.

The municipality’s Public Parks and Horticulture Department has identified four residential parks for making 20 per cent of their areas disabled-friendly.

The municipality said this work will be completed by the middle of January 2017. It has selected Za'abeel Park from the public parks to include 12 games for those with special needs.

The municipality indicated that it has identified the residential parks in Al Warqa’a, Al Tawar, Al Mankhoul and Muhaisna to make them disabled-friendly.

It said this will be achieved by making not less than 20 per cent of the parks’ total area suitable for people with disabilities.

The municipality said it is displaying under its wing at the exhibition for people with disabilities, which is currently under way in Dubai, a number of services and humanitarian initiatives for people with special needs under the slogan  ‘My will defy my  disability.’

The municipality indicated that services include customer service standards for disabled persons.

Dubai Municipality confirmed it is working to provide games suitable for this class of society in public parks of the emirate. It also hopes to make the parks suitable for disabled children and their non-disabled peers.

The municipality also disclosed the criteria for dealers to provide health facilities commensurate with the needs of people in wheelchairs and trained staff to assist with wheelchairs.

The municipality is also providing car parking slot for disabled people and special paths and electronic gates for their entry. Counters with lower height are being provided for people in wheelchairs.

People with impaired hearing are being provided with personnel trained in sign language and iPads.

There is an alarm system in sanitary facilities to alert disabled people of risk of harm to health.

The municipality said it is also providing trained people to deal with people with visual disability. It provided them with a guide  in Braille language, audiotape and alarm system to alert them if there is any risk of harm to their health.
