Dubai will announce the winners of the traffic “white points” in February for the first time since it introduced the landmark system early this year with the aim of encouraging drivers to respect road rules and reducing accidents.

The emirate’s traffic police chief Major General Mohammed Al Zafin said the winners would be granted cash and cars while other incentives would be given to drivers who are not selected but are found to have committed no offence through 2012.

Quoted by the local Arabic language press, Zafin said 13 UAE companies are sponsoring the system, which is intended to provide an incentive to all motorists to stick to traffic rules. Those who are found to have committed serious road offences would be deprived from taking part in the prize for a full year, he said.

The system, benefiting motorists with Dubai driving licences, involves a luxury car for the top winner and cash prizes for other winners.

We expect this system to contribute to reducing road accidents in the emirate by around 20 per cent after it is fully enforced,” Zafin said.

We said the system involves one white point for good drivers every month and maximum 12 points a year, adding that only those who are found to have committed no offence through the year would be selected as candidates for the prize.

“No candidate will lose in this incentive system because drivers who do not get a prize will be awarded 12 white points which will allow them to avert the confiscation of their vehicles for one month in case they committed a slight offence later…they will also not he charged any fee for one month-confiscation, which is Dh3,000,” he said.

Zafin said those who pile up 12 white points would be eligible to have one traffic offence abolished provided that offence does not involve black points.
