Dubai Police has announced harsher penalties and fines in the vicinity of Dubai Tram in a bid to keep the area safe and accident-free.

According to the Executive Council Resolution No (1) of 2014 concerning Regulating the Tramway System in Dubai, two new fines have been added to the list of traffic fines, Dubai Police has said.

Jumping the red light at the tramway intersection will invite a fine amount of Dh5,000, it noted. In addition, pedestrians crossing from undesignated areas along the tramway will be fined Dh1,000, it said.

“We call upon you all to follow traffic rules and regulations, for your safety and the safety of others,” Dubai Police said.

These two new fines for traffic violations are in addition to the fines announced earlier by Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA).

According to an earlier statement by the RTA, the fine for jumping a red light at the tramway intersection was punishable with a fine of between Dh2,000 and Dh5,000, with a possible loss of driving licence for a period of between 30 days and three months.

Jumping a red light at the tramway intersection and causing an accident leading to injuries will invite a fine between Dh5,000 and Dh15,000, the RTA said earlier. In addition, the offending motorist stands to have his or her licence revoked for between 30 days and six months.

On the other hand, jumping a red traffic signal at the tramway intersection causing an accident that leads to the death of a person is punishable with a fine between Dh10,000 and Dh30,000, along with suspension of the offender’s driving licence for up to one year, the RTA had said.

According to the RTA, pedestrians need to be aware around the tramway, and may not cross the tramway line except at a clearly marked crossing point and in designated areas.
