The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has updated its Safe Driving Manuals, considered as approved modules for driving trainees seeking various types of driving licences by inserting some educative signals with a view to raising their awareness about proper attitudes and actions as regards the tram movement on roads.

The step is taken in line with RTA’s vision of ‘Safe and Smooth Transport for All’, including protecting all parties from traffic accidents, and minimising offences and fines incurred.

Ahmed Bahrozyan, CEO of RTA Licensing Agency, said: “The Dubai Tram, which will be launched in November this year, is the first of its kind in the UAE and constitutes a great addition to the advanced transit system in Dubai.

“To ensure a smooth and safe movement of the tram, road users are required to observe and adhere to the signage and ground marking tailor-made for the safe operation of the tram.

“We have started educating and orienting fresh driving trainees at various driving institutes and centers in Dubai, the basics of the tram movement on roads through updating the safe driving manuals which are considered a key requisite for passing theoretical tests needed to obtain driving licenses.

The current safe driving manuals include core educative data about how to properly deal with trams moving on the road, highlighted by giving priority for the approaching tram.

-
All road users, pedestrians included, have to give way to the approaching tram, and the only exception here are emergency vehicles.

-        Moreover, road users have to refrain from any activity that may directly or indirectly hamper the tram’s movement.

-
The safe driving guide also includes crossing and access restrictions dictated by the nature of the tram operation.

-
Pedestrians are not permitted to cross or access the tramway, unless where explicitly allowed.

-
In the event of any traffic accident involving the tram, the involved parties have to remain in place of the accident, but without disrupting the traffic movement as much as possible.

“These safe driving manuals, which are mandatory to driver license applicants, contain a host of signage and markings relating to the tram, including directional and cautionary signage such as Tramway Crossing with Pedestrian Track or Crossing,” he added.

Booklets are subject to annual review and might be beefed up with new details in the forthcoming years in order to achieve the highest levels of compliance with traffic rules.
