The wait is finally over.

The biggest losers of the Dubai Municipality’s ‘your weight in gold’ campaign will walk away with their gold rewards this Thursday.

According to the officials at the civic body, a special ceremony will be held from 3pm at the Zabeel Park (gate no 2) to honour the winners of the unique weightwatchers programme.

The awards will be in one, two and five-gram coins.

Later in the evening, another event will be held to felicitate those residents who lost over 15kg.

All the winners have already been informed through mobile text messages and e-mail about how much gold they have won.

They have been advised to bring along a printed copy of that letter to the prize distribution ceremony.

The ‘your weight in gold’ campaign, which rewarded every lost kilo with a gram of gold, was conceptualised by the civic body to instill a healthy lifestyle among residents.

The more kilos people lost, the more gold they won.

To be entitled for the golden prize, the participant must lose a minimum of 2kg.

According to the organisers, more than 10,000 residents participated in the six-week weight-loss challenge, which kicked off on July 19.

Mohammed Al Noori, municipality’s director of marketing and relations, emphasised how this was a great way to encourage people to adopt a healthy lifestyle.

“Ours is a land of gold, so what better way to use it in our initiative,” he beamed.

“The aim is to awaken people because a lot of people take things for granted, and the last thing they think about is themselves.”

He insisted that “it isn’t only about the gold,” and the campaign will help spread awareness about the need to adopt a healthy lifestyle.

Soon after the launch of this campaign, the Dubai Municipality had doubled and tripled the gold rewards.

“Instead of what was previously announced, we will give two grams of gold for each kilogram for those who lose 5kg and above,” added an official.

“And three grams for each kilogram for those who lose 10kg and above.”
