The Dubai Ambulance Services Foundation paramedics had to make a tough decision when they received an emergency call from a high-rise in The Walk in Jumeirah Beach Residence.
A 58-year-old Iranian resident of an apartment on the 28th floor had a cardiac emergency and required immediate medical attention.
A report in Emarat Al Youm quoted Khalifa bin Dray, Executive Director of the ambulance services, as saying that when paramedics from the foundation arrived at the said tower, they discovered that the elevator at the building was not operational.
The head of ambulance team, Ghassan Elieich, told the Arabic daily it was a challenging situation as they were told the elevator would take time to be fixed. To handle the emergency situation in hand at its best they climbed the stairs all the way up to the 28th floor with oxygen cylinder and other medical equipment weighing at least 10kilos.
The patient’s pulse rate was 260 beats a minute when the medics examined her and she had to receive immediate medical care. In order to shift her to hospital the team had two options – either get on the roof-top and fly her in an air-ambulance or take her by road.
However, to reach the roof-top they would have had to climb another 15 floors, which was risky, recalled Elieich. So they decided to make her comfortable in a chair and carried her down the 28 floors and rushed her to Rashid Hospital in record time.
She underwent immediate medical procedures and is recuperating.
