Emirates flight returns to Dubai after passenger collapses, dies

The carrier plans to take on 27 new aircraft this year alone and is recruiting thousands of new staff to fill new positions and replace those left vacant by departing employees. (File)

An Emirates flight flying from Dubai to Adelaide was forced to land in Mumbai on August 9 following a medical emergency.

Flight EK440 landed in Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport at 7.30am (local time) after a passenger collapsed and died on board.

According to the Indian Express, the 60-year-old Australian national died while going to the washroom after he suddenly started bleeding from the mouth and the nose.

"It was apparently a case of cancer," a Mumbai International Airport Limited (Mial) spokesperson told Indian media.

When the passenger was taken to the RN Cooper Hospital in Juhu, he was declared brought dead.

Due to night time arrival and departure restrictions at Adelaide International Airport, the flight was forced to return to Dubai.

According to a statement issued by Emirates airline to Indian media, passengers were accommodated in hotels in Dubai and reboarded the EK440from Dubai to Adelaide, which was took off at 11 pm on August 9.
