An Asian man using a dummy gun robbed Dh800,000 from an exchange shop in Ras Al Khaimah but was caught by an Emirati and a Pakistani man.

The thief has just forced the shop’s staff to hand him over the money and ran away as residents began streaming into the mosque for Friday’s prayers.

Rashid Al Shimili, an Emirati, said he was going to the mosque on Friday when he saw people screaming at the fleeing man carrying a bag.

After he was told the man had just robbed an exchange shop, he stopped his car and chased him while a Pakistani man, Jalab Khan, ran past the thief and obstructed him.

“The thief fell down and was caught by Al Shimili and Khan…as they controlled him, police arrived in the area and arrested the thief,” 'Emarat Al Youm' daily said.

It quoted RAK’s CID director Brigadier Abdullah bin Mankhas, as saying the Asian used a toy gun to threaten the shop’s staff and order them to hand him  the money.

“They had no choice but to give him the money. After he left, the employees set off the alarm, chased him and screamed to passers-by for help,” he said.

He said the thief arrived in the UAE 18 days after the theft on a worker’s visa but he did not identify him.

Al Shimli and Khan were later honoured by RAK’s police commander Major General Abdullah Al Nuaimi.
