Tragedy struck at an Emirati family when their three-month-old daughter died of an unknown virus infection contracted just after visiting a bird zoo in Malaysia.

Her twin sister is bed-ridden at Khalifa Hospital in Abu Dhabi.

Ghalia was with her sister and parents on a visit to Malaysia in the last days of the fasting month of Ramadan when she fell ill and died in hospital there.

Her father Omar Al Ghafli, an Abu Dhabi lawyer who lives in Sharjah, said his daughter suffered vomiting, coughing and breathing difficulties a day after they visited the zoo in Malaysia.

“Doctors there said her lungs were damaged by the infection. They gave her medication but she died later,” he told the semi-official daily ‘Al Ittihad’.

“Her twin sister Maha also fell ill there. I rushed back to the UAE and took her to Khalifa Hospital, where she is still lying.”
