An unidentified Emirati man paid SR 5 million (Dh4.9 million) to save a Saudi man sentenced to death after killing another Saudi during a fight in the Gulf Kingdom.

Newspapers said the relatives of Abdul Rahman Al Otaibi had raised around SRfive million of the SR10 million demanded by the victim’s family as diya (blood money) to pardon the killer and save him from execution.

“The remaining SR five million was paid by a benevolent Emirati man, who preferred not to be named….this sum completed the diya demanded by the victim’s family to pardon Otaibi,” Sabq Arabic language daily said.

Otaibi stabbed his friend Abdullah during a brawl in the central town of Aldawadmi a few years ago and was later sentenced to death.

Under Islamic law, which is strictly enforce in the conservative Moslem Kingdom, a convicted killer can be saved from execution and set free if pardoned by the victim’s relatives in return for diya.

Two Saudi brothers buried their dead father and received mourners for three days before returning to their work in a nearby town.

On their way back, the two were killed in a road accident.

“The two brothers followed their father whom they have just buried…the wife of one of them also died in the accident,” Okaz Arabic language daily said in a report from the central town of Tarba.
