Two Emirati men, aged 17 and 19 years, were killed after their car overturned many times before settling on the sand nearly 250 metres off the road in Umm Al Quwain because of speed, according to traffic police.

The car was travelling on high speed on Emirates Road in the northern city at dawn on Friday when the driver lost control, causing the vehicle to hit the steel barrier separating the opposite lanes before it overturned many times.

The car was badly damaged as it was thrown nearly 250 metres off the road before settling on the sand, police said.

The driver, identified as YA, was killed on the spot while his friend, MS, was rushed to hospital but died later.

“We again appeal for motorists to adhere to speed limits and ensure their seat belts are fastened for their safety and for the safety of other road users,” UAQ traffic police chief Major Obaid Aran told Alittihad newspaper.

Four Asians killed in road accident in RAK

Four Asian cleaners were killed and 28 others were injured, some of them seriously, when their company bus overturned after it swerved off the road to avert a car coming in the wrong direction in Ras Al Khaimah.

The other car which was driven by an Emirati man made a sudden swerve and entered the wrong direction on its way from Shaam to Rams, where the bus was coming in the same direction on Thursday morning.

The bus driver turned off from the road to avert hitting that car, causing the vehicle to hit a power pole before overturning.

“Four Asians were killed in the accident while 28 others were injured….four of them were seriously hurt while 15 suffered from medium injuries and nine were slightly hurt,” the Arabic language Alittihad newspaper said, quoting RAK traffic police chief, Colonel Abdullah Ali Mankhas.

He said all the victims were from the same Asian country without specifying it, adding that the Emirati driver escaped unhurt.
