Exclusive Dubai neighbourhood with no addresses

The reality of not having streets named or villas numbered has become a source of frustration for Al Khawaneej residents in Dubai.

“It is always an issue to guide delivery couriers or just anyone to my villa in Al Khawaneej 1.

“I also find it embarrassing to say that my area does not have a street name or villa number. I have to justify the lack of address by saying that it’s a new area in Dubai,” says Sheikha Abdulla, an Emirati resident of the area.

However, Sheikha’s troubles may soon be a thing of the past.

When approached, the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) said it is going to start naming streets in the Al Khawaneej area by the beginning of 2015.

An official said the RTA is currently also working on villa numbering in Al Khawaneej area. The plan is to finish the address system by the end of this year.

Al Khawaneej is a new community in Dubai almost exclusively populated by prominent Emirati families.

Compared to the rest of Dubai, the villa sizes are huge. Hardly any expats live there.

Sheikha, who has been living in Al Khawaneej for more than five years, adds: “Whenever I’m asked for my home location, the response I’ve memorised is: ‘No street or villa number, it’s a new area’."

According to Sheikha, the only well-known landmark that exists in the area is the Arabian Center, and “that is not even close to my villa”.

“I have to spend about 10 minutes to direct people to my villa, with the conversation always ending with, it’s the third house on your left with a dome, a brown gate, and lots of palm trees,” she added.
