A fire gutted some caravans used as the site office and residential quarters of a major construction project in the Al Mizhar area on Tuesday morning.

The caravans were parked inside the Dubai Islamic Bank property earmarked for a major residential project.

Dubai Civil Defence officials said the fire gutted an office and residential caravans, but there were no injuries or casualties.

The skyline near the Dubai International Airport was overcast with thick smoke, but it did not obstruct visibility for planes taking off or landing at the airport.

Another site office of Emirates Road Contracting Company in the same plot was not affected by the fire.

“A part of the gutted caravans was used as the office of a major residential project under development. It happened inside a property owned by Dubai Islamic Bank. We have brought the fire under control and it did not spread to the adjacent villa or affect the heavy electrical appliances and overhead power line of Dubai Electricity and Water Authority [Dewa],” said a Civil Defence official.

The project is located adjacent to the completed Al Ithihad Mall located on Al Khawaneej Road.

He said nobody was inside the office when the fire started and the Civil Defence team worked for more than three hours to bring it under control.

Nothing is left of the caravan except for a partially burnt air conditioner and the metal roof. Most of the documents and furniture in the office were damaged in the fire.

A source from Emirates Road Contracting Company said the fire also gutted a project site office of another company.

The Dubai Islamic Bank property is located on plot No 261/1300 adjacent to the Ithihad Mall/Union Cooperative in the Al Rashidiya/Canage area.

A Dewa source said the most probable reason for the fire is short circuit following a power surge apparently due to the high power lines passing through the area.

“I could see thick smoke coming up from the airport area, but the fire did not obstruct visibility for the airplanes landing or taking off from the Dubai International ‘Airport. The Roads and Transport Authority [RTA] is also developing the access road and infrastructure for the Al Rashidiya park and ride section. The Emirates Road Contracting Company is doing the project for the RTA,” said the source.
