Power to KM Trading building in Ajman's Sheikh Rashid Bin Humaid street was cut off late Sunday evening after a fire broke out in an apartment.

Civil Defence personnel and fire-fighters rushed to the spot. "They were using cranes to rescue people," reported a resident in a nearby building.

"The fire alarm has been ringing continuously, and that's why I rushed out to see what was going on."

Another eyewitness said black smoke appeared from the fourth floor.

"We couldn't see fire, only smoke," he added.

"We also spotted people in the top floors waving clothes from their windows."

Ajman Civil Defence confirmed there was a "small fire", and added it was triggered by "smoking".

Many residents who made their way down to the road were in their night-suits.

"We heard knocks on our door and there were people asking us to go out of the building.

"It was tough to see clearly because there was no light, only the dim light of the 'exit' signs," said one resident.

A few residents took their cars out of the building parking and decided to sleep in it.

"We have been told that we can go back in only tomorrow."

Ambulances were also on the scene.
