Fires set for insurance or settling scores: Police

Vehicle fires comprise 54 per cent of the total intentional fires in the last three years in Dubai, reveal the latest statistics of General Department of Criminal Evidence and Criminology, Dubai Police.

Colonel Fahad Al Mutawa, Director, General Department of Criminal Evidence and Criminology, said blaze cases were concluded after detailed analysis, and added that people resort to such steps in order to either claim insurance amount or settle personal scores.
 
However, the total percentage of fires that were started intentionally over the last three years was only 8.4 per cent, which is considerably low.
 
Col Mutawa said mostly youngsters resort to set another’s vehicle on fire to take revenge, ignoring the consequences. He urged young people to live morally.
 
Mohammed Ahmed Abu Eitah from the department said there were 163 cases of intentional fires reported between 2010 and 2012 out of a total 1949 cases, which comprised 8.4 per cent.  
 
On an average in 2010, the department saw 46 per cent intentional vehicle fires involving 30 vehicles, which included 5 bikes.
 
In 2011, it was 55 per cent of deliberate vehicle fires, again involving 30 vehicles, including 26 cars.
 
And last year, 56 per cent of vehicle fires included 20 vehicles, 3 bikes and 2 excavators.
