The Ministry of Economy has said that the prices of essential commodities including vegetable will be reduced up to 25 per cent during the Holy month of Ramadan.

Dr Hashim Al Nuwaimi, Director, Consumer Protection Department, MoE, was quoted as saying by 'Khaleej Times' that "meetings have begun with distributors, suppliers and major hypermarket owners to discuss modalities for bringing down the prices of foodstuff, fruits and vegetables during the holy month of Ramadan as well as throughout the year."

“In the last couple of years, an irregular supply of fruits and vegetables from outside of the country led to price increases here," he added.

The essential food items include rice, oil, flour, tea, milk, pulses, sugar, chicken and a variety of juices. Each item would have various brands, which could result in about 500 different food items. These items will be displayed separately bearing a logo of the MoE so that consumers can identify them easily, Al Nuwaimi explained.

Action will be taken against groceries that sell fruits and vegetables at higher prices, he said. "If we come across major violation of MoE’s norms, the matter would be referred to the court,” he added.
