A major car recall that spanned auto giants Ford, Toyota and General Motors was instituted across the UAE yesterday, with thousands of cars being recalled.

Al Tayer Motors and Premier Motors, official agents for Ford, Lincoln, Mercury are recalled 81 cars in the UAE. These include Ford Fusion, Ford Explorer, Ford Sport Track, Mercury Milan and Mercury Mountaineer.

These cars have manual levers to adjust the front seats and in case of a collision, the seats fall backwards by a distance that is more than that which is allowed by the Federal Safety Codes for Cars, mandatory by the US Ministry of Transport.

Toyota will reportedly recall up to 3,711 cars to solve possible steering and airbag problems with its Lexus LX470, Toyota Avalon and Toyota Corolla models.

The news follows an August 1 recall announcement by General Motors on its Chevrolet Express 2010 and GMC Savanna 2010 models.

Saud Abbasi, General Manager Lexus at Al Futtaim Motors has confirmed that 2840 Lexus LX470s, manufactured between 2002 and 2007, were involved in a steering shaft mechanism recall.

“We are contacting all the existing owners to explain the situation and organise a complimentary rectification,” said Abbasi.

“Al Futtaim Motors will work closely with the UAE’s Ministry of Economy with regard to the implementation of this campaign.”

Earlier today local media reported that more than 800 Toyota Avalons and 55 Corollas would also be involved in Toyota’s recall.

Under the General Motors' recall, advertised as a  “maintenance campaign”, Chevrolet Express and Chevrolet Savannah models are being hauled in over electrical problems.

“These cars have electrical problems and most of them need replacement of their voltage regulating wire. This is a one-day job and it can be completed in the same day or the next day,” an Al Ghandhi Auto maintenance staffer told Emirates 24|7.

The cars involved  in the GM campaign are Chevrolet Express 2010 with chassis numbered  A1128328 – A1145608 and GMC Savanna 2010 models with chassis No. A11028395 – A1901741.
