A forensic doctor with the Dubai Police was fined Dh500 for failing twice to attend the court and give her testimony in the assassination case of Chechen rebel leader Sulim Yamadayeve.

The Appeals Court had scheduled the hearing of Dr Farida Al Shamali with regards to the fingerprints of MT, the Iranian accused, which were found on the zipper of the handbag that contained the weapon used for killing the Chechen leader.

The judge asked the prosecution to inform the doctor to attend the next hearing.

The Dubai Court of First Instance awarded MT, an Iranian clerk, and MK, a Tajik businessman, life sentences for their role in killing Yamayadev on March 28, 2009 in Dubai.

Dubai Police Chief Lt Gen Dahi Khalfan Tamim, on Sunday said at a news conference that one of those in custody has implicated a senior official in Chechnya’s government.

He said while an Iranian and a Tajik are in custody, four other suspects are at large.

In April last year, Lt Gen Tamim, had announced the arrest of the two accused.

Yamadayev’s killing is the first politically-motivated slaying in Dubai and the latest in a series of brazen assassinations targeting Chechen renegades in and outside of Russia.

Yamadayeve was a bitter adversary of Chechnya’s powerful Moscow-backed leader.
