Fraud cases in Dubai fall significantly

Cases of forgery in Dubai has significantly reduced, according to official statistics.

The number of cases fell by 183 last year as compared to that of 2011, said Forgery and Counterfeiting experts, General Department of Criminal Evidence and Criminology, Dubai Police.

They dealt with 1,566 forgery cases in 2012 and involving 25,434 documents, said Mona Salem Al Suwaidi.

Manipulating signatures topped the different kinds of forgery, with 609 cases  recorded in 2012, Al Suwaidi added.

Document forgery cases involved bank cheques, property contracts, documents for phone connections, etc.

About 370 passport cases were recorded last year, while credit card cases fell by 29 last year, compared to 50 in 2011, she said.

Hassan Ali Zainal Abidin said counterfeit currency cases totalled 198, involving UAE dirham; US dollar; pound sterling and Indian rupee.

Suspects usually deal with a huge quantity of currency to make quick bucks, he added.
